A Burning Man 2026 Honoraria Project
Above & Below is a large-scale, immersive art installation by Sean Orlando, created in collaboration with the Five Ton Crane Arts Collective, a community of artists, fabricators, and builders dedicated to creating ambitious public art, with fabrication support by Engineered Artworks.
At the base of the sculpture is a dreamlike home filled with objects, stories, and mysteries to explore. From there, a climb upward through a beanstalk leads to a hidden space in the sky: a glowing Victorian cottage suspended 40 feet above the playa. Above & Below imagines the life of an inventor and maker who has created a magnificent, otherworldly shelter for himself and his daughter, one that echoes the life of the artist behind it. The piece reflects a world shaped by curiosity and care – an environment rich with art, invention, and play – and invites participants to explore, discover, and reconnect with their own sense of wonder.

Our Goal
A project this big requires both community involvement and real resources – steel, wood, lighting, transport, equipment, and the time and expertise of experienced professional fabricators. Our goal of $400,000 will help us design, fabricate, transport, and install Above & Below on the playa.
Every dollar directly supports the materials, labor, engineering, and logistics needed to bring this project from the shop to Black Rock City.
